Instructions: Wash beans under cold running water, then let them soak for 1 hour in enough water to cover them completely. Drain. Saute onions in oil for 15 minutes. Add drained beans, carrots, thyme, and bay leaves, along with enough water to cover the beans by 3 inches. Bring to a boil over low heat, then simmer for 1 hour. Add figs and cherries. Simmer 45 minutes longer. Season with salt and pepper. Remove bay leaves.
