Instructions: Sift flour and baking powder into a bowl, rub in butter until free of lumps.
Add saltanas, sugar, mixed peel, and vanilla essence. Make a well in the center, add beaten eggs and gradually mix in the milk. Mix together thoroughly to form a smooth batter. Put the mixture into a well buttered deep ovenproof dish and bake in a moderately hot oven 190C/375F for 30 minutes or until well risen and firm to touch. Serve sprinkled with sugar.
