Instructions: Cream sugar, Crisco and add 1 egg at a time. Sift flour, salt and baking soda into buttermilk. Add to creamed mixture; add vanilla. Bake in stem pan 1 hour at 350 degrees. Turn out on rack after cooling 10 minutes.

NOTE: Buttermilk equivalent - 1 cup with 1 or 2 tablespoons vinegar added to cup measure. Fill cup with sweet milk and let stand 5 minutes.
