Instructions: In a shallow bowl, combine eggs, buttermilk, salt and sugar. Dip bread slices into egg mixture. Coat both sides well. melt butter or oleo in a large skillet and brown on each side. Serve with syrup, honey or cinnamon and sugar.
This recipe yields 4 servings. Variations: o Hawaiian French Toast: Substitute 1/2 cup pineapple juice for milk. Serve with sliced bananas, toasted coconut and powdered sugar. o Honey Spice French Toast: Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 3 tablespoons honey to egg and milk mixture. Serve with cinnamon and sugar. o Orange French Toast: Substitute orange juice for milk and add 1 teaspoon grated orange peel. Serve with powdered sugar. o Sesame French Toast: Before turning bread in pan, sprinkle sesame seeds on each piece. Turn and fry until golden brown. Serve seed-side up. o Nutty French Toast: Before turning, sprinkle finely chopped nuts on each piece. Turn and serve nut-side up. o Royal French Toast: Layer 2 to 3 pieces of cooked French toast, fresh or frozen sliced peaches or sliced strawberries, sour cream or cottage cheese, nuts and powdered sugar.
