6 x to 8 slices stale bread, firm white, , or french
1 x softened butter
1 x dijon mustard
3/4 lb shredded cheese, swiss and/or chedd, ar
2 cup milk
2 x eggs
1/2 tsp salt
1 dsh tabasco sauce
1/4 tsp white pepper
1 x ******optional************
Instructions:
Instructions: Preheat oven to 325F. Butter a 2 quart casserole. Tear bread into chunks and spread with butter and mustard; place in casserole. If using ham, scatter over bread. Spread cheese over. Mix milk, eggs and seasonings, pour over. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or refrigerate as long as overnight and then bake 45-50 minutes. Serve immediately.

NOTE: This is a good way to use up stale bread and cheese.

This recipe dates from the first half of the 19th Century.
