Instructions: A simple dish that my grandmother used to make (though very heavy in calories.) Butter two large slices of sliced bread. On one piece of the bread, spread a little English mustard and top it with a goodly layer of hard cheese.
Place the second piece of bread on top so that a sandwich is formed and press together firmly. Meanwhile beat an egg and a tablespoon of milk together using an open dish. Put the sandwich into the beaten egg and milk mixture and turn it so that both sides have been dipped and are covered, with the mixture. Scrape off all the excess egg and leave to drain. (dont put it onto kitchen paper as it will stick but you can put it onto greaseproof paper) . In a heavy based fry pan melt a large knob of butter, do not turn the heat up too high as the butter will blacken. When the butter is hot, place the sandwich in and fry. turning frequently until it is golden brown on both sides. This will take about 6 minutes. Serve either alone for an evening snack or with salad for a more substantial meal. Email this Recipe:
