Instructions: Mix the flour and pepper together in a large bowl and rub in the butter.
Peel quarter core and chop the apple then stir into the dry ingredients with the cheese and chopped nuts. Make a well in the centre. Whisk together the egg and milk then pour into the well and mix to a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead quickly into a small neat round about 160mm diameter. Mark a lattice on top of the round. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake on the grid shelf on the floor of the roasting oven with the cold plain shelf on the top runners for about 40 minutes or until well risen and golden brown. Cool on a wire rack This bread is best eaten on the day of making. This bread makes a perfect accompaniment for soups and salads.
