Instructions: Cream shortening and sugars. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Sift flour, baking soda and salt; add to the creamed mixture. Mix with hands (or electric mixer) until well blended. Spread into a greased and floured 9x12-inch pan, and pat down. Sprinkle chocolate chips on batter, and press down lightly. Whip egg whites, gradually adding the 1 cup brown sugar, until stiff. Spread on top of chip layer, and sprinkle with chopped nuts.
