Instructions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet with the butter. In a large bowl, sift the flour, baking powder and salt. Stir until well-blended.
Using a pastry cutter or two knives, cut the shortening pieces into the flour mixture. The mixture should have the consistency of coarse meal, with no large pieces of shortening visible. Add the milk and stir just until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the bowl. The dough will be quite sticky. Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface. Dust hands with flour and gently knead the dough for about 1-2 minutes. The dough will still be a little sticky, but if its too sticky, add a little more flour while kneading. Pat the dough into a circle about 3/4-inch thick. Using a 3-inch biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits. Reroll the scraps and cut out additional biscuits. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake until the tops are golden, about 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve warm. Email this Recipe:
