Instructions: Place sugar, salt and water in heavy sauce pan and stir until dissolved. Wipe sugar crystals from side of pan with heavy, damp cloth. Place on high heat at first. DO NOT STIR OR SHAKE while syrup is boiling over good.. Add cream sprinkling it all over pan. It will then boil nearly to top of pan like soap suds. Reduce heat after it has boiled for a while.
When it is cooked low (DONT ALLOW TO SCORCH) test by dropping from the tip of a teaspoon. When a hair about 3 or 4 inches long forms remove from heat and pour onto a well buttered marble slab. Sprinkle vanilla over top. As edges cool lift and turn over, When cool enough to handle take outside and pull. Get where there is a little breeze and pull fast into long rope. Keep pulling until it is white and it is so hard that you can barely pull. Stretch onto wax paper sprinkled with confectioners sugar. With scissors cut into pieces and allow to set for an hour or so. Wrap in wax paper and twist ends. Place in metal candy or cake box and set it in a warm room overnight It should be creamed by the next day. Keep in covered container or it drys out and gets sugary. NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WORK THIS EXCEPT ON A COLD, CLEAR, BREEZY DAY. It must be pulled outside, quickly in the wind and cool fast. 1/2 recipe is about all one person can pull at a time.
