Instructions: Preheat your grill to medium.
Build the sandwiches by placing a thin layer of cheese followed by a slice of ham, and then another layer of cheese. Place another piece of bread on top. Trim the edges, cutting off any excess crust. Butter both sides well and place as close to the burners as you can. Grill until well browned on both sides. This recipe yields 4 servings. Comments: Leave it to the French to come up with the best toasted ham and cheese sandwich in the world. We here in America have a pretty good version of the Croque Monsieur that has thin slices of smoked country ham and shavings of good Vermont cheddar between slices of good sourdough bread.
