Instructions: Set the oven at Gas Mark 5 375 degrees F 190 degrees C. Peel core and slice the apples and place in the prepared dish.
Sprinkle over the sugar cloves (if using) and lemon rind. Beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg. Fold in the sifted flour cinnamon and milk. Spoon this mixture over the apple slices and spread evenly to cover completely. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until the apples are cooked and the topping is golden brown.
