Instructions: In Dutch oven or stew pot, fry meat until crisp. Add onions and cook until soft and transparent. Add potatoes and stir to coat with fat. Add water, salt and pepper and cook covered until potatoes are tender. Add thickening, stirring until smooth. Add milk and reheat to serve. You can add other vegetables or meat if you wish. Sometimes I liked to cook Dumplings on top for a change. In this case leave out the milk replacing it with extra water. When potatoes are almost done add the dumplings as follows:
Dumplings or Dough Boys: They need no fat as there is usually enough on the stew. Combine dry ingredients. Add milk stirring to make a stiff dough. Spoon lumps the size of an egg on the top of the stew. Cover and "DO NOT PEEK" while cooking for 15 minutes. These can be used on any stew. Lorettas note: My mom always had to make a sign to put on top of the cover because the family liked to check on whats cooking! Email this Recipe:
