Instructions: Heat oil in saucepan. Add onion, bay leaf, and celery seed. Saute 3 minutes. Stir peas, barley, and lima beans. Transfer mixture into a large pot. Add 2 quarts water and bring to a boil. Cook on low heat partially covered for 1 1/2 hours. Add salt,pepper, vegetables,and herbs. Simmer another 30 to 40 minutes on low heat.
