Instructions: Cream butter and sugar well; add syrup. Dissolve soda in sour milk and add to first mixture along with flavorings and spices, mixing thoroughly. Add the 5 eggs, well beaten, then the 4 cups flour. use 1 1/2 cups flour to coat the fruit; add to the batter. Pour into well greased and floured 10 inch tube pan and bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 hours or until toothpick inserted in center comes clean. NOTES: The method given is from a similar recipe in an old White House Cookbook. As with many old recipes, no amount of flour was given, just "flour to stiffen". It also said to dissolve the soda in sour milk, then "Mix all ingredients well and bake 1 1/2 hours in moderate oven."
