Instructions: Sift dry ingredients together. Add lukewarm water and knead dough for 5 minutes. Cover with a clean, damp towel and allow to rise 15 minutes.
Heat shortening in heavy cast iron skillet (about 375 - 400 degrees. Pinch off small portions of dough and roll out into 4-inch rounds. Poke a small hole in the center with a toothpick to allow grease to escape. Drop rounds into hot oil and allow to brown for a few seconds, turn over and brown the other side. Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve with butter and salsa or with honey, Fry breads can also be used for tacos instead of tortillas (see Navajo Taco Chili in Meats & Main Dishes).
