Instructions: With an electric mixer or wooden spoon, combine sugar and butter together until creamy. Add egg, vanilla, almond extract, flour, soda and cream of tartar.
Mix until thoroughly combined. Chill dough at least 3 hours. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out dough 1/8 inch thick and cut cookies into shapes, then bake 8 to 10 minutes. Cool the cookies and coat with icing. Thin Powdered Sugar Icing: Mix 1 cup sifted powdered sugar, 1 to 2 tablespoons milk, water or cream, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until smooth. Makes 1/2 cup.
