Instructions: Mix the breadcrumbs and flour, rub in the margarine, add the sugar, preserved ginger (chopped) and ground ginger. Mix together with 3 ozs of the syrup, beaten egg and soda dissolved in the warm water. Turn the mixture into a greased cake tin, over which tie a piece of greased paper, making a handle with the ends of the string. Place the tin in an aluminum casserole containing a little boiling water. Cover with a well-fitting lid, Place the casserole in the oven for about 1 hour, topping the boiling water up as necessary.
