Instructions: Boil sugar and water for 5 minutes. As sugar-water begins to cool, add shortening to melt. After mixture cools completely, add salt and eggs. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add to mixture. Add flour a little at a time until dough is not sticky.
Heat oven to 200 degrees. Place large bowl of dough in the oven on a cookie sheet, shut oven off and let dough rest for 3 hours. Do not open oven door. Punch dough down and roll in a ball, then return to oven for 3 more hours. (If the oven is no longer slightly warm, you can warm it again, but you wonOt need to warm it all the way to 200 degrees . ) Grease glass pans and hands with shortening. Shape dough into desired bun sizes. Place in greased glass pans. Cover with a towel and let rise for 6 hours, or overnight, in a warm place (not the oven). Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Brush with butter after baking. Note: If you start the recipe at 2 p.m., you can let the buns rise overnight and bake them in the morning. The buns are great for sandwiches with leftover turkey, or by themselves. OThey have become a family tradition and acquired the added name OBoomerO when my sisterOs black Lab ate a whole bowl of dough.O Email this Recipe:
