4 oz (1/2 cup) polished masoor dhal (split red lentils)
2 tbl ghee
1 med onion finely chopped
1 x clove garlic finely chopped
salt
1 sm onion sliced into long thin strips
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp black peppercorns
Instructions:
Instructions: Clean the lentils thoroughly then wash and soak them for at least 1 hour.

Boil 1 1/2cups water then add the lentils.

Stir well and cook for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile fry the cumin and peppercorns in 1 tbs ghee for 2 minutes then add the onion and garlic and fry until golden.

When the lentils are cooked add the onion and spice mixture plus a little turmeric.

Add a little water if necessary and salt.

Add remaining ghee and when melted serve or put into warming drawer or low oven where it will keep.

You may also fry an onion garnish for the dhal.
