Game plan: New Years Day brunch. Goal: To pass on the linen, china and silver. Block any recipes that require more than a few minutes of preparation and eight ingredients, but sideline the unimaginative suggestion to serve just chips and dip. Score a winner with simple dishes that will taste as good at kick-off as at half-time.

Pregame warm-up: Prepare as much beforehand as possible, whether its setting out warming trays, baskets and bowls or slicing vegetables, washing fruit or baking brownies.

Starting lineup: Orange Burst Smoothie, Tomato Citrus Marinated Olives, Zesty Cheese Fondue, Texas Chicken With Black Bean Salsa, Festive Spicy Rice, One Bowl Sweet Chocolate Brownies and Spicy Buffalo- Style Meatballs.

Half-time entertainment: Compliments for the cook and a rush on the buffet table.

Post-game comments: Any more brownies?
